You will notice that no matter how much any tory MP talks up liberties they will NEVER vote that way. They always vote with the rest of the party and always in an extremely authoritarian direction.
See recent police bill voting for an example. Zero tory rebels as always.

@paul This is something that happens in Australian politics also. Some members of a party espouse progressive or fresh ideas. However, when you dig into it, they always vote the exact same way as the stodgiest and most retrograde party members. Parties overwhelmingly vote as a block. The rest is just PR.
@adz The MPs rightly think that people will remember their soundbite rather than their actual actions. Sadly media in the UK and I presume Australia regularly fail to point this out to anyone.
@paul The media focus on the juicy drama and the "now." All context is removed and history - even very recent history - is ignored. It is depressing.
