Owned my x220 for yonkeys donks and yet only found out a couple of weeks ago that there is a special incantation to stick on the boot parameters that reduces cpu temp and therefore fan usage and extends the battery life greatly. Always something to learn
@kkremitzki Yes. I added this to the end of my GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub
i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1
(I'm using Arch but the explanations of what these settings do can be found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/PowerManagement/PowerSavingTweaks).
I've noticed no artifacts on my machine and everything runs much cooler. Previously even watching YouTube videos would get the CPU temp in the 90s. Now it hovers around 60 degrees. Worth a try.
