Reducing links to birdsite

BTW youtube-dl works for extracting videos from tweets so if you were thinking of linking to a video in a tweet, you can just borrow it instead

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul this just sounds like a justification for stealing other people's content, imho

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin If the content is on Twitter it's public

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul proper attribution for another person's work is the right thing to do and linking back to that person's online presence is the best and easiest way to do that.

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin I disagree. Linking to harmful silicon valley corporations is not the right thing to do.

Anything that stops traffic to FB/Twitter/Google etc is inherently good.

If the creator has a personal website that would be fine to link to, but not something hosted by surveillance capitalists.

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul if you really want to stop traffic to other sites, maybe stop going there for content to bring back here and focus on creating your own instead

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin I don't go there so no need to worry on that front.

As for "creating content" I'm not here to fish for boosts or favourites or cash so I won't bother with that either

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul so why are you advocating the use of youtube-dl to rip video from tweets

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin to deprive surveillance capitalists of the personal data that they use to make money

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul I don't see how stealing other people's work achieves anything other than being a jerk to those people but you do you

Follow

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin That's how surveillance capitalism is accepted. Most people don't really know how the sausage is made so they don't see anything wrong with it.

The real people you should be worrying about are those that "steal content" for vast amounts of money such as mr zuckerberg slate.com/articles/technology/

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul you know you can avoid using those services and also not steal other people's work, right

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin I already don't use those services. Also I'm not "stealing" anything.

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul there's no such thing as "borrowing" someone else's video. Extracting it to repost it elsewhere is theft.

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin no it isn't. Theft deprives the original person of the item being stolen.

It's copying

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul the item you're stealing is credit for the work done

Reducing links to birdsite

@Hyperglavin no-one is suggesting stealing credit for anything.

Reducing links to birdsite

@paul @Hyperglavin
Usually creative contents (picture or videos) has it's own imbedded signature like watermarks, logos to show who created. Simply reposting them are not stealing since the signature indicates their creator.
But it is stealing when someone scratch off this signature and put someone else's, and then posted somewhere else.

Reducing links to birdsite

@hnb @paul It should not be up to the creator to embed watermarks in their work to protect it from us. It should be up to us to not repost it without attribution in the first place.
